Jackie Mittoo, Duke Reid, Prince Buster, Studio One – all names that summon the spirit of Jamaica in the early ‘60s and that gave rise to the sounds of ska and rocksteady. The Skatalites recorded their first album, Ska Authentic, in 1964. But by the end of the following year the group had already split, leaving little recorded music, but an almighty legacy, in their wake.
Lester Sterling is the sole surviving member of the original ten-man band and is now the saxophonist commanding eight other musicians still recording and touring under the original name. A new album All Roads is due for release this year to coincide with the huge tour of North and South America.
