Some musicians manage to emerge unscathed from the so-called difficult second album. That’s been the case for the paulistana singer Tulipa Ruiz, who will likely be performing the tracks from her much praised album Tudo Tanto (Everything, So Much) at Cine Joia in São Paulo on 13 February.
While her first album, Efêmera (2010) established the São Paulo artist as a definite one to watch, Tudo Tanto (2012) confirmed her place as a singer who transcends limits, plays around with her superb voice and, in a confessional tone, reveals truths in her lyrics.
Thanks to her partnerships with musicians of the likes of Criolo, Daniel Ganjaman, Kassin and Ilhan Ersahin, who were crucial in helping to give Tudo Tanto just the right tone, Ruiz has branched out in experimentation and plurality. However, her show’s best moments come when Ruiz reveals herself to be dangerous, as evident on the dense track ‘Víbora’ (Viper), a bluesy song that gives some smoothness to her sharp edge.
But it’s worth saying that this girl likes surprises. For Ruiz, music is a changing and evolving thing, with the song she puts down in the studio just one of many musical possibilities. So don’t be surprised if your favourite tunes sound completely different live.
