When Moscow-born musician Regina Spektor released Begin to Hope in 2006, it was one of the most refreshingly creative albums at the time in any genre – a versatile collection of nineteen tracks showcasing a bold new songwriting talent that could swing from Chopin-esque beauty to straight-up rock from one track to the next.
Spektor's wonderful vocals, blessed with a wispy top range and effortless trills, help her drape each song's story with a special sincerity. She couples unusual touches of character and unorthodox singing techniques with her classical piano training. Her most recent album, What We Saw From the Cheap Seats further cements an endearing sound that refuses to be categorised, so seize the chance to catch a rare talent at work and prepare to be swept into Spektor's world.
