In São Paulo's hilly western suburbs of Morumbi, the striking Modernist house at the heart of the Fundação Maria Luisa e Oscar Americano is the setting for a fortnightly Sunday morning classical music recital. The house was once the home of well-to-do São Paulo engineer and impresario Oscar Americano, who founded the Foundation after the death of his wife, Maria Luisa.
A bright room on the ground floor, with space for around 100 visitors, hosts a rotating programme of guest pianists, singers and string quartets. Stay on for a simple lunch or afternoon tea in the Foundation's café afterwards, a wander in the 75,000 sq metres of parkland, or a nose around the house, where the impressive collection of art, furniture and objects – augmented considerably since its beginnings as the Americanos' private art collection – spans the history of Brazil since colonial times.
