São Paulo: Mostly Cloudy
This event has finished
Nestled comfortably alongside the likes of Florence and The Machine and Disclosure at the top of the list of the hottest bands to emerge out of the UK in the last ten years, The xx casually broke indie hearts across the globe with their beautifully programmed melancholy just as Massive Attack had two decades before with Blue Lines. That they have yet to play live on São Paulo turf, despite two smash records and an ever-growing Brazilian following, looks like making this gig at HSBC Brasil one of the highlights of the music calendar this year.
With beatsmith Jamie XX (it sounds better than Smith, after all) currently the undisputed leader at wringing emotion from a bank of samplers and synths and the vocalists Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim still duelling wistfully over the top on second album Coexist, the band has developed at a considered pace. With side projects on which to cut loose, the experimental urges have been kept in check, allowing their live show to come together after a self-conscious start to performing live.
It is undoubtedly a shame that they have already outgrown smaller venues, but get set for what will nevertheless be one of the most eagerly awaited live performances in recent memory.
