Throughout February, SESC Pompéia will be filled with the colours, music, theatre, folklore and sing-song accent of Brazil’s North-Eastern state of Pernambuco. Those that can’t make it to the state’s capital city Recife, and neighbouring Olinda, for Carnival this month can get a feel for the rhythms that permeate the celebrations, such as the visceral, percussionary maractu – and the fast-paced frevo.
The musical highlights include two gigs by Otto (3 and 4 February), a former member of ’90s rock band Nação Zumbi. Júnior Barreto brings his Pernambuco-mixed samba style on 9 February. Signer Lirinha, one of Otto’s former collaborators, will perform an original blend of music, poetry and theatre on 10 February. One of the state’s most important cultural ambassadors, the musician, dancer and actor Antonio Nóbrega, will stage some musical theatre (on 11 and 12 February) to the rhythms of maracatu, frevo and baião, while the young Pernambucano pianist Vitor Araújo, will be adding improvised touches to classical piano pieces on the 16 February.
Throwing yet more Pernambucano ingredients into the mix, kids will be able to get their hands dirty in workshop creating Carnival masks (7, 9, 14 and 16 February) and bonecos de Olinda (14-17 February) – the sinister giant heads that parade through Olinda during Carnival. udding record producers can have a crack at digitally remixing the marchinhas – traditional Carnival songs.
