After a while away from the stages and studios – Gal Costa's last album, Hoje, was released in 2005 – the Bahia native came back with a bang with the 2011 album Recanto, composed and produced by her partner, fellow MPB royal Caetano Veloso. With the album and in this show, Costa experiments wth funk in songs like ‘Miami Maculelê’, and with electronic music, as in the pulsing, unforgettable ‘Neguinho’.
It makes it a difficult album to recreate on stage, but with plenty of practice under her belt from shows earlier this year, including in São Paulo in September, Costa pulls it off majestically. We saw the show in September, and Costa was utterly compelling, prowling the stage in black to the hypnotic blips and beats of the music, with arrangements by Veloso. Listen out for gems like ‘Baby’ and ‘Da Maior Importância’, and Costa's incredible version of ‘Um Dia de Domingo’, by Tim Maia, which showcases the power and versatility of her voice. Tickets go on sale on 21 December for this must-see show.
