The stage name of avant-garde folkie Francisco de Borja is a play on words referencing both the singer’s screwball attitude and his frankly deranged facial hair (bigote is Spanish for moustache). Audiences at Beco 203 can expect plenty of both when Bigott and his band descend on the venue at the end of June to showcase songs from 2011’s highly acclaimed The Original Soundtrack, as well as favourites from the Spaniard’s four previous LPs.
As for the music, it’s hard to define – and we suspect deliberately so. Songs such as ‘Dead Mum Walking’ and ‘She Is My Man’ have garnered favourable comparisons with Johnny Cash and Tom Waits, but that doesn’t do justice to the singer’s poppier moments or the live band’s ability to transform mellow acoustic ditties into incendiary floor-fillers at the drop of a hat. So don’t be surprised if Beco turns into a Bigott balada before your very eyes.
