So much for kids putting an end to your social life as you once knew it. The day-time party Disco Baby, launched in August 2012, gives parents the chance to join in on the fun along with their little ones. Crafted as much for parents as for the kids, the daytime party – 'matinee' – is run by the journalist and author Claudia Assef, and features well-known artists in the electronic music world, such as the renowned drum 'n' bass DJs Marky and Patife.
The volume is set at a healthy 80-85 decibels and has tame lighting, but no strobe lights, dry ice or soap bubbles. 'The idea is to replicate the security of a wedding party,' says Assef, also a DJ and the mother of two young children, 'where kids can dance with grandparents, aunts and uncles but in an environment that's designed for them – that creates a sense of wellbeing.'
