Marco Carola

The techno DJ shaped his sound as a teen

Growing up in Naples may have been a far cry from Detroit or Berlin, but nevertheless, DJ Marco Carola’s techno credentials are now up there with gods of the scene like Derrick May. Indeed, it was to escape his hometown’s all-pervasive Italo-house sound of the nineties that Carola discovered his love for techno, a sound rarely heard under the Neapolitan sunshine at the time.

With a distinct lack of labels and artists serving up the chugging beats and faster BPMs, Carola followed the only path available at the time: he set up on his own. Design Music became Italy’s first techno-devoted record label, and by forging ahead in his own vision and unencumbered by any ‘scene’, his unique brand of dance music began to find favour with techno DJs worldwide.

A massive influence on the Italian techno scene throughout his 20-year career, he has headlined at every major club in the world. More recently a fixture in Ibiza, where he was a resident at Cocoon in 2010, he warms up for another summer on the White Isle by taking the roof off at D-Edge with a barrage of beautiful noise.

Marco Carola plays D-Edge on 19 May 2011.
