Slow-food lovers will have a field day at this artisan farmers dinner. An initiative that started in the US in 1999, 'Outstanding in the field' are a series of outdoor banquets, prepared by a celebrated chef, for one hundred or so diners in a bucolic location. Nearly all of the food served at each event comes from within just a few miles of the location, the idea being to reconnect people to the source of their food, as well as celebrate the local farmers and producers.
Having gathered something of a cult following among foodies in the US, 'Outstanding in the field' has gone international, with dinners hosted last year on farms from Great Britain, Ireland, Spain and Italy to the Netherlands and Denmark. And next up is Brazil, with a one-off dining experience in a farm (Fazenda da Toca) near São Carlos, about 200 kms from São Paulo.
One of the darling chefs of the São Paulo restaurant scene, Helena Rizzo, chef at Maní, will be in charge of the menu, serving delights including beetroot ravioli with ricotta, palm heart noodles, arroz de galinha caipira (chicken stew with rice) and a meringue, chocolate and strawberry mountain.
Tempted? A ticket to the meal doesn't come cheap, at R$490 per person (including transport there and back from São Paulo). And it seems a long way from the hippy-vibe of an organic farm in California, with the host for the day being Pedro Paulo Diniz, the Formula 1 racing driver and member of the wealthy clan that own the Pão de Açúcar group of supermarkets, as well as the host farm, Fazendo da Toca. What can we say? It's outstanding in the field, São Paulo style.
If you've missed the São Paulo event, 'Outstanding in the field' will be heading on to Porto Alegre on 11 March.
