Featuring arts and crafts by around 45 artists and artisans, the 12th edition of the annual Mercado A Mão Cheia market takes place from 26 to 28 October. Conceived by the artist Hideko Honma as a way to show and sell the work of her arty students, the market features ceramics – Honma’s own speciality – as well as jewellery, woodwork and many other lovely handmade artifacts.
Held at Honma’s atelier in Moema, it’s a perfect opportunity to break the habit of a lifetime – or to continue one, for more organised souls – and put in some early Christmas shopping. Look out for the new line by Honma herself, which features cups, plates, bowls and other items used in tea ceremonies.
The market welcomed around 1,000 people through its doors at the opening day last year, so be warned: the chance to get first look at what’s on offer is one thing, but it might be better to let the first wave subside and head along in a more leisurely fashion over the weekend.
