Bom Retiro, one of São Paulo’s oldest neighbourhoods, is the stage for the latest production from the critically acclaimed paulistano theatre company, Teatro da Vertigem. Written by the Brazilian poet and novelist Joca Reiners Terron, the performance takes place outside, with the audience following the cast on an evening walk through the heart of the neighbourhood, historically the centre of the city's textile industry, and best known nowadays as a magnet for budget shoppers.
The itinerant play isn't solely confined to the streets – some scenes are set inside a small shopping centre and in an abandoned building nearby, telling the story of colourful local characters; a woman dreaming of buying the dress of her dreams; a Bolivian immigrant working as a seamstress; and a mannequin looking for a job. 110 mins.
Tickets can be bought by telephone or online via ticketsforfun.com.br (a Brazilian CPF ID number is required), or in person at the Fnac store, Avenida Paulista 901 (2123 2000/ fnac.com.br). Tickets must be picked up in advance at Fnac, or printed off, as there is no box office at the performance location in Bom Retiro.
Note, the performance is cancelled on rainy days.
