Flying dancers defy gravity and test the body’s physical limits as part of the poetic work of Arranha Céu. The performance, which combines theatre, dance and circus, is being staged by São Paulo dance group, Cia. Base.
Living up to its name, which translates as 'skyscraper', the performance features five dancers, a flying singer, suspended musicians and two actors, who construct a physical dialogue with the city, from as high up as 50 meters. The city appears as the backdrop, with the building façades which surround the performance venue – the courtyard at SESC Pinheiros – used as part of the set design.
The choreography, by director Cristiano Cimino, is lofty and fluid yet filled with tension as performers portray frenetic office relationships fraught with isolation and stress.
