Besides such bold new takes on revered pieces like Hamlet, the programme for MITSP, the first Mostra Internacional de Teatro de São Paulo (São Paulo International Theatre Festival) also features more contemporary plays, including Romeo Castellucci’s provocative Sobre o Conceito da Face no Filho de Deus (On the Concept of the Face, Regarding the Son of God).
Superimposing scatological images and belligerent themes on an artistic representation of Christ’s face, the work caused such offence during Parisian performances in 2011 that Christian protesters invaded the stage, attacking the actors. Hopefully, the SP staging won't inspire the same level of outrage.
