For a night of ballet and opera in one, don’t miss Vila Rica Suite and Pedro Malazarte at the Theatro Municipal. Camargo Guarnieri’s Vila Rica Suite is a ten-part film score written in the late 1950s, and performed at the Theatro Municipal by the Orquestra Municipal de São Paulo, conducted by Carlos Moreno, with accompanying an performance from the Balé da Cidade. Afterward, another work of Guarnieri’s – an opera, Pedro Malazarte – will be performed. The libretto was written by Modernist literature’s leading figure, Mário de Andrade, and was put to music by Guarnieri following Andrade’s instructions to create a Brazilian opera that completely avoided European blueprints.
Both groundbreaking works, Pedro Malazarte and Vila Rica Suite, are part of the celebrations of the 90th anniversary of the Semana de Arte Moderna de ’22 or ‘Week of Modern Art of ’22’, that became legendary after artists, musicians and writers attempted to make a clear break from the nation’s creative past by working in the Modernist spirit in Brazil.
